What this tool does
The primary category decides which searches you are eligible to appear in at all. Get it wrong and nothing else compensates. No amount of posting, photographs or reviews will put you in results you are not eligible for.
The list of official categories is long and the names are not always what you would call yourself. Businesses regularly sit under a category that sounds right and is not the one their customers are searching against.
How to use it
Search your type of business to see the official categories that match.
Compare what your competitors sit under, especially the ones outranking you.
Set the primary to the one that matches what you most want to be found for.
Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely provide.
Worth knowing
This is the highest leverage field on the profile and one of the least examined. Changing a primary category can move visibility more than months of other work, in either direction, which is why it is worth checking rather than guessing.
Questions
How many secondary categories should I add?
Only the ones you actually offer. Three accurate beats nine hopeful, and irrelevant ones dilute the signal from your primary.
Can I change my primary category?
Yes, though not casually. It changes what you are eligible for, so check what competitors use before moving.
Should I copy the market leader?
Look at what they use, then choose what fits you. Copying a category you do not match is how profiles end up wrong.
