A local rank checker that shows the whole map, not one position.
Type a keyword, pick a business, and this local rank tracker checks the Google Maps position from dozens of points across the area. You get a coloured grid showing where the business wins and where it disappears, with no personalisation attached to the reading.

What is a local rank checker?
A local rank checker is a tool that reports where a business appears in Google Maps and the local pack for a given search. A good one does not return a single position, because a single position is not a real thing: local rankings change street by street, and the number your own phone shows you is shaped by your history and where you are standing.
This local SEO rank checker lays a grid of points over the area a business serves and asks the same question at every one of them. The result is a map where each pin carries its own rank. A business can sit at position one beside its own front door and fall out of the top twenty four miles away, and only the grid shows you that.
Local rank checker and local rank tracker usually mean the same tool used two ways. Checking is the one off question, asked when a client wants to know where they stand today. Tracking is the same scan set to repeat, so the answer becomes a line rather than a snapshot.
What people call a local rank checker.
These all describe the same scan. If you searched for any of them, this is the tool you were looking for.
Local rank checker
The one off question. Pick the business, type the keyword, run the scan and read the map. Nothing to configure before you get an answer.
Local SEO rank checker
The same scan used as a measurement step: run it before the work, run it again after, and the difference is the record of what the optimisation did.
Local rank tracker
The scan on a schedule. It repeats on the day you choose, keeps every result, and turns the history into a trend line per keyword.
Google Maps rank checker
Maps position specifically, read point by point rather than as one number, so you can see the streets where you stop appearing.
GMB and GBP rank checker
Same listing, older name. Google My Business became Google Business Profile in 2021 and the rankings behind it did not change.
Geo grid rank checker
The method rather than the product. A grid of coordinates, each one queried separately, each pin coloured by the rank it came back with.
Local pack rank checker
Where the business sits in the three results shown beside the map, and which parts of the area fall outside that top three.
Service area rank checker
For trades with no shopfront. The grid covers the region served rather than clustering around one office pin.
Multi location rank checker
One scan definition applied across a portfolio, with results rolled up so you can sort branches best to worst.
How to check local rankings, step by step.
The first scan takes a couple of minutes. Everything after that is the same scan running without you.
-
1
Pick the business and the keyword
Search for any business, including one you do not own. Add the service term, the city term or the near me search you actually care about.
-
2
Set the grid size and how far it reaches
A dense grid over a few streets answers a different question from a wide one over a county. Both are valid; pick the one that matches the area you serve.
-
3
Run it, and read the colours
Each pin comes back with its own rank. Green is where you show up, red is where you do not, and the boundary between them is the thing worth looking at.
-
4
Open a weak pin and see who took it
Every point lists the businesses ranking above you at that spot, so a weak zone comes with the name of whoever owns it.
-
5
Set it to repeat
Choose the day and the frequency. The scan runs in the background for every location you track and the data is ready before the client asks.
-
6
Export or share the result
PDF for the client, CSV for your own analysis, image for a slide. Or send a white label report link that carries your branding.
What a local rank checker scan actually reports.
Five numbers and a map. Each answers a different question, and the difference between them matters.
| What it is called | What it means | What it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Rank per pin | The position returned at one grid point | Where exactly do I stop appearing? |
| Average rank | The mean position across every point scanned | Did the whole area get better or worse? |
| Visibility | How much of the grid you appear on at all | Am I present, before asking how high? |
| Share of local voice | Your slice of the results across the grid, against rivals | Am I gaining ground or just holding it? |
| Coverage | The portion of the area where you place at all | How big is the zone I actually serve on Google? |
Two ranks per keyword, not one
A keyword carries a Maps rank, which is the position in the full Google Maps list, and a local pack rank, which is the position in the three results shown beside the map on Search. They move independently and most tools quietly report only one of them.
Nothing personalised
Readings carry no account history and no device location, which is why they disagree with what you see on your own phone. Your own search flatters you. This does not.
Why one rank number tells you almost nothing.
Ask most tools where a business ranks and you get a single figure. That figure is an average of an average, and it hides the only thing that matters, which is that local results change with the position of the person searching. Proximity is a ranking factor in a way it simply is not in organic search.
The practical consequence: a restaurant can be told it ranks fourth, and that number can be true, while it is actually first for everybody within half a mile and invisible to the entire half of the city where its customers live. Those two situations demand completely different work, and one number cannot separate them.
A grid separates them in one screen. It also settles the argument about whether the work is landing, because the shape of the coloured area either grew or it did not.
| Question | One rank check | Geo grid local rank checker |
|---|---|---|
| Where do I rank? | A single number | A number at every point |
| Where do I disappear? | Cannot say | Shown as the red edge of the map |
| Who beat me there? | Not available | Listed per pin |
| Is it personalised? | Usually, silently | No account or device history |
| Did my work move it? | One number against another | Two maps side by side |
See what moved, and who took the space.
Compare two scans
Put an older scan next to a newer one and every pin that moved is marked. This is the fastest honest answer to whether the last month of work did anything.
One against one
Pick a single competitor and see both grids together. You learn the streets they own, the streets you own, and where the line between you sits.
Study whoever is winning
Open a business ranking above you and read its categories, review count, rating and profile strength. Usually the reason is visible within a minute.
Local rank reports you can put your own name on.
Every scan feeds the reporting layer, so the report is the data rather than a rewrite of it.
Trend report
Scan history turned into a line per keyword and location, so the question of whether visibility is rising, falling or flat has an answer rather than an opinion.
Location report
Results one branch at a time, sortable best to worst. Built for the franchise or brand team that needs to know which sites to spend the month on.
White label
Your logo and colours, none of ours. Share as a link or a PDF that reads like your own product, and schedule it so it arrives before the client asks.
Who a local rank tracker is actually for.
Agencies
Scan a prospect before the pitch, then track every client on a schedule. Reports go out branded as yours, and users are not charged per seat.
Franchises
One scan definition across every franchisee, with results rolled up so head office can see which territories are actually being served.
Multi location brands
Sort branches by visibility and find the handful dragging the average down. It is rarely the ones anybody suspected.
Single location owners
Find out how far your visibility actually reaches from your own front door, which is usually less far than it feels.
What a local rank checker cannot do for you.
It measures. It does not move anything. A grid full of red pins tells you precisely where the problem is and nothing at all about why, and the temptation to read a cause into a scan is the most common mistake made with this kind of tool.
It also cannot prove attribution. If the map improved the month after you fixed your categories, that is a sequence, not proof. A competitor may have closed, Google may have adjusted something, or the season may have turned. Running the same scan on a branch you did not touch is the closest thing to a control you will get, and it is worth doing.
And no rank checker can promise a position. Rankings depend on Google, on proximity, on your competitors and on the market. Anyone selling you a guaranteed position has already agreed to deliver something outside their control.

Questions about checking local rank.
What is a local rank checker?
A tool that reports where a business appears in Google Maps and the local pack for a given search. Rather than returning one position, a geo grid local rank checker queries dozens of points across an area and gives each its own rank, because local results change with where the searcher is standing.
What is the difference between a local rank checker and a local rank tracker?
Mostly how often you run it. A local rank checker answers the question once, today. A local rank tracker is the same scan set to repeat on a schedule, keeping the history so you can see a trend rather than a snapshot. Both are included here; the difference is a setting, not a different product.
What is a local SEO rank checker?
The same tool described by the job it does within local SEO work: measuring before you change anything, then measuring again afterwards so the effect of the work is visible. Used that way the scan is a control rather than a curiosity.
What is a geo grid?
A set of coordinates laid over the area around a business. The rank is checked separately at each one and the pins are coloured by the result, so the map reads as a heat map of where you are and are not visible for that keyword.
Why does this disagree with what I see when I search?
Because your own search is personalised. It carries your location, your history and your previous visits to your own listing, all of which push you up. Grid readings have none of that attached, which makes them less flattering and considerably more useful.
Can I check the rank of a business I do not own?
Yes. Scans read what Google shows publicly, so no access to the owner’s account is needed. That is what makes it usable on a prospect before a sales call, or on a competitor at any time.
Does it work for a service area business?
Yes, and this is where a grid earns its keep. Trades with no shopfront get a scan spread across the region they actually serve rather than clustered around an office pin, which shows the towns and postcodes where they are invisible.
Can I schedule scans so they repeat?
Yes. Pick the day and the frequency and the scan runs in the background for every location you track. You never rebuild the same scan, and the data is current before anybody asks for it.
Does it keep a history of scans?
Yes. Every scan is stored with its date, keyword and average rank, and any old scan can be reopened to see the map exactly as it was. That history is what the trend report is built from.
Can I compare two scans?
Yes. Scan compare puts an older grid next to a newer one and marks every pin that moved. You can also run a one against one comparison with a single competitor to see which areas each of you owns.
What is share of local voice?
Your slice of the visible results across the whole grid, measured against the businesses competing on the same keyword. It answers a question average rank cannot: whether you are gaining ground on rivals or simply holding a position while somebody else grows.
Is there a free local rank checker?
You can run scans during the three day trial with no card needed to start. Free tools elsewhere generally cap you at one small scan, because every grid point is a separate query and those cost money to run. After the trial it is from $5.33 per location per month with every other tool included.
How many keywords should I track?
Fewer than instinct suggests. Track the searches that actually bring calls, usually a main service term, a city or suburb term and a near me variant. Twenty keywords tracked badly tell you less than three tracked properly.
Can I use it across many locations?
Yes. One scan definition applies across a portfolio and results roll up so branches can be sorted best to worst. Pricing is per location and users are unlimited, so a bigger team does not change the bill.
Can I send the report under my own brand?
Yes. Trend and location reports carry your logo and colours with none of ours, shared as a link or a PDF, and can be scheduled so they arrive on a fixed date.
Will a better rank on the grid mean more customers?
Usually, but not automatically, and the grid cannot promise it. Appearing in more of the area gives more people the chance to choose you. Whether they do depends on your reviews, your photos and what happens after they call, none of which a rank checker measures.
Run one grid scan and see the real shape of your local rank.
