Domain Authority Checker

Check any domain's authority score and compare it against competitors, as a relative reading rather than a grade.

  • ✓ Any domain
  • ✓ Compare two sites
  • ✓ Free and unlimited
  • ✓ Third party, not Google

Authority scores are made by SEO companies, not by Google. Google does not publish one and does not use these. They are still useful, as long as you use them to compare two sites rather than as a mark out of a hundred to improve.

What the score actually is

It is not a Google figure and it is not used in ranking. Treating it as a grade to improve is a well known way to spend months on an output instead of a cause. The score moves when your links change. Chasing the score directly is chasing a reflection.

Why the scale is misleading

The scale is logarithmic, so gaps that look equal are not. Going from twenty to thirty is a very different amount of work from going from sixty to seventy. These scores also explain less in local results than in general search, where proximity and your profile matter more.

How to use it sensibly

Use it to compare, not to target. If a competitor beating you locally has a similar score, the difference is somewhere else, probably the profile or reviews. If they are far ahead, links are part of the story but rarely the whole of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google use this score?

No. Google does not publish an authority score and does not use these. They are made by SEO companies.

Should I try to raise it?

Not directly. Improve the things that cause it. Chasing the number itself is chasing a reflection.

Why do scores differ between tools?

Each company builds its own from its own index. Compare within one tool, never across two.

Does it matter for local ranking?

Less than for general search. Proximity, categories and reviews usually explain more of what you see locally.

What is a good score?

There is no good score. There is only the gap between you and the businesses you compete with.

A comparison, not a target

Authority scores compare two sites. If a rival with a similar score is beating you locally, the cause is usually the profile rather than the links. Check what your profile is missing instead.

Domain Authority Checker

Authority scores are estimates made by third parties, not figures published by Google. They summarise how strong a site's link profile looks compared with others. Useful as a comparison, meaningless as a target.

They get misused constantly. Agencies report the score rising as though it were an outcome, when it is a proxy for one, and the score can climb while enquiries do nothing at all.

For local search it matters less than people assume. A well maintained profile with genuine reviews will regularly outrank a stronger site in map results, because the map pack weighs different things entirely.

How to use it

  • Enter a domain to see its authority estimate.
  • Compare against direct competitors rather than a target number.
  • Look at where their links come from, not the score alone.
  • Weight it lightly for local rankings. It matters more for ordinary web results.

Why it matters

Knowing the number stops it being used against you. When somebody quotes an authority score as proof of progress, understanding what it measures lets you ask what happened to enquiries.

Questions people ask

Is authority a Google ranking factor?

No. Google publishes no such score. These are third party estimates of link strength.

What score should I aim for?

None. Compare with competitors if useful, but chasing the number is chasing a proxy.

Does it matter for map rankings?

Less than proximity, categories and reviews. A weaker site with a better maintained profile regularly wins locally.
