Backlink Checker

See any domain's backlinks and referring domains, and compare your link profile against the businesses outranking you.

  • ✓ Any domain
  • ✓ Referring domains
  • ✓ Free and unlimited
  • ✓ A sample, not the whole web

No tool sees every link on the internet. Each one reports what its own crawler has found, so every backlink figure is a sample. That makes the exact count unreliable and the comparison useful, because both sites are sampled the same way.

Why counts differ between tools

Every tool reports what its own crawler found. None of them see everything, and they do not see the same things. That is why two tools give two answers for the same site. Pick one and compare within it.

Referring domains matter more

Fifty links from one blog is one relationship counted fifty times. Fifty links from fifty different sites is fifty relationships. When you compare, look at referring domains rather than the raw link count, which is easily inflated.

How much links matter locally

Less than in general search. A local business with a thin link profile can outrank a stronger site through proximity, categories and reviews. Links are worth having and they are rarely the thing holding a local business back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this show fewer links than another tool?

Each tool reports what its own crawler found. None see the whole web. Compare within one tool, never between two.

Links or referring domains?

Referring domains. Fifty links from one site is a single relationship counted fifty times.

How many links do I need?

There is no number. What matters is the gap between you and the businesses beating you locally.

Do links matter for map results?

Less than proximity, categories and reviews. Worth having, rarely the main blocker for a local business.

Should I buy links?

No. It breaks Google's rules and the risk is far worse than the modest local benefit.

Links are one input, and rarely the blocker

A local business is usually held back by its profile rather than its links. Measure where you actually disappear across your area before spending money on link building.

Backlink Checker

For a local business the useful links are unglamorous and findable. The chamber of commerce, a supplier page, the club you sponsor, the local paper that covered something you did.

Looking at a competitor's links is the fastest way to find yours, because most of those sources will link to any local business that asks. They are not competitive. They are simply unknown to you until you look.

Volume is the wrong measure. A hundred links from directories nobody visits are worth less than one from a local organization with a real audience, and the second kind is usually easier to get than people expect.

How to use it

  • Enter a competitor domain rather than your own.
  • Ignore the total. Read the list of sources.
  • Mark the local ones you could plausibly approach.
  • Ask. Most local link sources say yes to anybody who bothers.

Why it matters

Link building for a local business is mostly a research problem. The opportunities exist within a few miles and the obstacle is not knowing they exist.

Questions people ask

How many links do I need?

No number. A few genuine local links beat hundreds of directory entries nobody reads.

Should I buy links?

No. It risks a penalty, and for local search it addresses the wrong thing entirely.

What is the easiest local link?

Organizations you already deal with. Suppliers, trade bodies, clubs you sponsor. They tend to say yes because you already have a relationship.
