A title that is too long gets cut off. A title Google does not think fits the page gets replaced entirely. Both are easy to avoid and hard to spot in a spreadsheet, which is why writing them against a preview beats counting characters.

Why Google rewrites titles

Google rewrites titles when they are stuffed with terms, or when thirty pages on your site all say the same thing. It usually swaps in a heading from the page instead. Writing something that genuinely describes the page is the way to keep the title you wrote.

What the description actually does

The description is not a ranking factor. It is advertising copy for the result. A clear description gets clicked more often than a keyword stuffed one, and that is the whole reason to write it carefully.

One page, one job

If several pages need near identical titles, the pages themselves are probably too similar. That is worth fixing at the page level rather than trying to write your way around it in the title tag.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a title be?

Short enough not to be cut off, which the preview shows you directly. Counting characters is a poor substitute for seeing it.

Why did Google change my title?

Usually because it was stuffed with terms or too similar to other pages. Describe the page plainly and it tends to stay.

Does the description affect ranking?

No. It affects clicks, which is reason enough to write it properly.

Should every page have a unique one?

Yes. If you cannot write a distinct one, the pages are probably too alike to begin with.

Do I need keywords in the title?

Write it for a person. A natural title that describes the page usually contains the right words anyway.

One page at a time, or every page at once

Writing one title here is quick. Keeping titles and descriptions right across forty location pages is a different job, and that is what the platform handles.

Meta Tag Generator

The title and description are your advert in the results. They will not lift your position much, and they heavily influence whether the position you have produces anything.

Length is where most go wrong. Too long and the end is cut off, often mid sentence and often exactly where the useful part was. Too short and you have wasted space you were given.

For local businesses the town belongs in the title, near the front. Somebody scanning results is checking whether you are nearby before they read anything else about you.

How to use it

  • Write the title with the service and the town, keeping it inside the visible width.
  • Write a description that gives a reason to choose you.
  • Preview it as it will appear, not as it looks in a text box.
  • Make each page different. Duplicate titles across pages help nobody.

Why it matters

Two sites can hold the same position and get very different results from it. What separates them is usually the two lines of text in the listing.

Questions people ask

Does the description affect rankings?

Not directly. It affects clicks, which is why it still matters.

How long should a title be?

Short enough not to be cut off. Aim comfortably inside the visible width and put the important part first.

Should every page have its own?

Yes. Duplicate titles waste the space and make pages harder to tell apart.
